PRACTITIONER OF CHINESE MEDICINE

To be honest, Chinese medicine wasn’t even on my radar when I was considering a career. I wanted to pursue a career in medical research. And I did that. I graduated with an HB.Sc. in Genetics from the University of Western Ontario and moved to Calgary to complete an M.Sc./Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. My research focused on gene regulation in cancer. After a year and a half, I left my program to deal with a recurring depression that started during my undergraduate studies—it was retriggered by the diagnosis and passing of a dear family member from the disease I was studying. I never returned to medical research.

It took me years, but, eventually, I came to understand that my depression was the result of the cumulative effects of multiple traumatic events I had experienced during my life. Trauma has a way of showing its presence in the most unexpected ways and it doesn’t always appear immediately after a traumatic event. Trauma can also reveal hidden paths and offer some of life’s most valuable teachings.

During some of my darkest days of depression, I started experiencing excruciating pain and severe swelling in my feet. It got so bad sometimes that I had to crawl because I couldn’t bear the pain of standing or walking. I went to a doctor who could do nothing but prescribe diuretics, which I knew would do little if anything. One day, I found myself walking by a Chinese medicine clinic. Something inside me told me to make an appointment. I did. Over the next two years, the pain and swelling in my feet resolved, and my depression also lifted. At the time I didn’t know it, but I had found the exit from my depression and the path to a career I dearly love.

I graduated from the Alberta College of Acupuncture & Traditional Chinese Medicine in 2005 and passed my licensing exams later that year. I have now been practicing for 18 years and I am more passionate than ever about Chinese medicine and the opportunities it offers for healing on all levels. My approach draws from my personal experiences, academic background, and thousands of years of Chinese medical wisdom. My practice bridges the divide between the ancient and the contemporary; between the physical and the energetic; and between the tangible and the intangible to rebuild the foundations of health, restore vitality, and redefine wellness for every person who visits our clinic.
